Laurentian University expecting strike

By Rosalind Russell – Laurentian University faculty members will be in a legal strike position on January 19.

According to the release, back in December, the university issued a no board report to the Laurentian University Faculty Association when bargaining came to a standstill.

That in turn triggered a legal strike, so faculty members could hit the picket lines by next Monday.

The biggest issue is members’ pensions.

They have indicated through surveys that they wish the pension plan to be out of the hands of the administration and would prefer a transition to a jointly sponsored pension plan, such as the University Pension Plan of Ontario.

Members voted 98 per cent in favour of going on strike last November.

There are around 450 full- and- part-time members who would be in a strike position.

Mediation talks continue through this weekend, but if no deal is reached, the picket lines could be set up next week.
