By Rosalind Russell – A new homelessness and addiction hub has opened to serve communities along the North Shore.
The Maamwesying Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment Hub has opened in Sault Ste. Marie and will also serve the Blind River area and Sagamok-Anishnawbek First Nation.
The hub held its grand opening last week and according to the release will be part of a broader effort with plans for a total of 28 hubs known as HART opening across the province.
Leaders from all the member communities met for the ribbon cutting emphasizing the hub will provide culturally relevant care, trauma services and accessibility to services across the North Shore Corridor.
A key component is partnering with other services for access to transitional beds, supportive housing units and a range of treatment and recovery services specific to meet each community’s needs.
The initiative aligns with two key strategies led by the Ontario government: the Indigenous Healing and Wellness Strategy and the Mental Health and Addictions Strategy.
