Laurentian University strike action anticipated today

By Rosalind Russell – Laurentian University communications say talks have failed and a strike action is expected today.

According to the release, the Laurentian University Faculty Association (LUFA) has informed the university that its members plan to withhold their services and will hit the picket lines today.

Although there are few details released, the university confirms an agreement has not yet been reached despite meeting over the last four days.

The main issue deals with the pension plan provided by the university with members wanting another plan put in place not directly involving the institution.

The university says even with strike action, the campus will remain open, but all classes will be suspended temporarily.

Members voted 98 per cent in favour of going on strike last November.

There are around 450 full- and- part-time members who would be in a strike position.

Classes, labs, seminars and other activities led by faculty members and instructors both online and in-person would stop temporarily, but activities led by University staff (non-LUFA) will continue, including most student services.

Non-credit Additional Qualifications courses and professional development courses, offered by the Centre for Teaching and Continuing Learning, will continue to be offered.
