By Rosalind Russell – An Elliot Lake school has opened a new wellness classroom for its elementary students.
Renée Mathis, Principal of École catholique Georges Vanier says the school celebrated the official opening yesterday.
She says the space is designed to promote relaxation, learning, and the socio-emotional development of students from Kindergarten to Grade 8.
She adds the room, named “Le Club d’Hector” in honour of the school’s mascot, Hector the Beaver, stands out for its warm atmosphere inspired by nature.
Mathis stresses the room represents much more than a simple place to relax; it is a concrete commitment to enriching school life, supporting learning in all its forms, and fostering the well-being of all students so they can flourish throughout their education at Georges Vanier.
Following brief speeches and a ribbon-cutting ceremony, students, staff members, and guests had the pleasure of discovering this unique space for the very first time—an environment created to support the well-being and growth of the entire school community.
Le Club d’Hector offers a variety of features and equipment that promote both wellness and student engagement, including desk bikes, reading corners, board games that foster social skill development, as well as areas dedicated to individual or collaborative work.
Students will also be able to practice strategies for emotional regulation, recharge, and enjoy moments of quiet in the presence of a school staff member or Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon’s Well-Being and Inclusion Services team.
After school hours, Le Club d’Hector also serves as the headquarters for the school’s eSports (electronic sports) team, which uses the space for practices and tournaments.
