TRAFFIC STOP FOR SPEEDING RESULTS IN $119,400 IN SUSPECTED DRUGS SEIZED

(ESPANOLA, ON) – A person is facing drug-related charges after police seized a quantity of suspected drugs during a traffic stop.

On Saturday, February 7, 2026, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 17 near Michon Road in the Baldwin Township. Officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that was found to be driving 99 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. An investigation was initiated, where police discovered the driver was a suspended driver. The driver was subsequently arrested.

Additionally, police seized amounts of suspected cocaine and oxycodone, with a total estimated value of $119,400.

The driver, Michael MENZIES, 31-years-old from Thunder Bay, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine)
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking (opioid) – two counts
  • Speeding 1-49 km/h over posted limit
  • Driving while under suspension – two counts

The accused was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
