Pool repairs nearly complete in Elliot Lake – reopening soon

By Rosalind Russell – The City of Elliot Lake says repairs to the Ruben Yi-Juuti (EE-yuti) pool are nearly complete and expect it to be opened by early March.

The facility has been closed since July 2nd of last year due to an acid leak, which corroded much of the equipment in the room.

According to Kari Kluke, Director of Recreation and Culture, staff worked with a specialized group to stabilize the mechanical room equipment to prevent any further corrosion.

She says contractors reviewed the equipment and the work carried out to replace electrical equipment that was damaged.

Kluke adds that the transition of the pool from an acid-based system to a CO₂ system has also been completed and a portion of the room closed off to store the chlorine tanks to prevent a similar spill incident.

She says CO₂ is a safer and more reliable method for balancing the pool’s pH levels and poses a significantly lower risk to both staff and equipment.

The final inspections are nearly complete and the pool is tentatively set to reopen on March 9th.
