By Rosalind Russell – Over the last year, the Thessalon hospital site overseen by the North Shore Health Network has had to shut down its emergency department several times due to a shortage of physicians.
Nickel Belt MPP, France Gelinas was joined by Hamilton Centre MPP, Dr. Robin Lennox at Queen’s Park to bring the issue to the attention of the provincial government.
Gelinas says Northern Ontarians are being left behind while the Ontario government ignores the growing crisis in emergency care.
Lennox adds the constant closures are about doctors and physicians not being available where they’re needed most, so they are proposing the government take a more active role in alleviating what they say is a crisis.
He and Gelinas are calling on Queen’s Park to host a province-wide physician recruitment and retention plan so that every community can count on local care.
