By Rosalind Russell – The Manitoulin Sudbury Social Services Board has taken a close look at housing throughout the two districts and finds there are still critical shortages of new homes and rising costs in maintaining the properties they already see.
In a report prepared by two staffers (Lori Clark, Director of Integrated Human Services and Sherry Frost, Integrated Human Services Manager), a Housing Needs Assessment was completed earlier this year that identified an aging population, increasing housing instability, and evolving community needs are driving greater demand for supportive housing options.
At the same time, the report says supply of affordable housing remains constrained, slow to expand, and in many cases not aligned with current demand trends.
It was also noted a significant portion of the agency’s housing stock is aging and requires ongoing repair.
Two recommendations have emerged: that the board support a comprehensive review of operating expenses across the Community Housing portfolio and that the Finance Committee consider future funding adjustments during the 2027 budget process.
