By Rosalind Russell – Insurance requirements have led to the demise of the annual Duck Race to raise money for the North Shore Search & Rescue.
According to the release, the unit’s insurance carrier will not cover the insurance for additional boats and volunteers from outside organizations, so the organization cannot hold the event.
The annual Espanola Duck Race was started by Brennan House back in the 1990s to raise funds for a temporary home for displaced teens and those in crisis but had to close its doors due to cuts in funding.
Eventually, it was taken over by search and rescue as a fundraiser to cover the cost of insurance and vital equipment.
Other Canada Day traditions continue in Espanola, including family events at the Espanola Elks and Northern Life Church.
