
By Rosalind Russell – Member social services boards of Northern Ontario Service Deliverers Association have met with ministers to discuss the future of child care and early years services at the Association of Municipalities.
According to the release, NOSDA members met with Paul Calandra, Minister of Education and Ministry of Education staff to discuss the future of child care and early years services in Northern Ontario at the conference, which is being held this week in Ottawa.
During the discussion, NOSDA highlighted the importance of viewing child care as essential economic infrastructure that supports workforce participation, economic growth, and community sustainability across the North.
NOSDA advocated for a Northern Early Years and Child Care Access Strategy focused on improving access to child care spaces, addressing workforce shortages, and supporting service sustainability while recognizing the unique realities of rural, remote, and Indigenous communities.
The conversation also reinforced the important connection between child care, housing, workforce development, and economic growth in Northern Ontario.
NOSDA is continuing its meetings with various ministries with the conference wrapping up tomorrow.
