By Rosalind Russell – Ontario’s big city mayors, including Paul Lefebvre of Sudbury, are renewing their call for action on the homelessness, mental health and addictions crisis through the next phase of the Solve the Crisis: From Crisis Response to Recovery campaign.
Lefebvre says in Greater Sudbury, they have stepped up because people need help and, together with community partners, they are investing in housing, homelessness and community-based services, expanding access to supports and opening their HART Hubs.
He emphasizes, however, that despite these efforts, the crisis continues to grow.
He admits residents are frustrated and worried about what they’re seeing in their neighbourhoods and downtown, local businesses are concerned, and the frontline workers in hospitals, shelters, emergency services and community organizations are exhausted.
Lefebvre says the city needs more support, and he and his fellow mayors recognize that.
He adds that the Greater Sudbury Police Services Board recently called on the Ontario government to create a legislative framework for involuntary addiction treatment, and he supports that call.
