National Aboriginal Veterans Day this Sunday

By Rosalind Russell – National Aboriginal Veterans Day, also called Indigenous Veterans Day, is a memorial observance honouring the military service of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people.
Nickel Belt Member of Parliament France Gélinas will attend a ceremony to mark Aboriginal Veterans Day in Atikameksheng, tomorrow, November 6th, honouring veterans who lost their lives in service to the country.

She says the day reflects both their extraordinary wartime contributions—often marked by skills like marksmanship and tracking and by acts of bravery in major conflicts—and the injustices many faced upon returning home, including denial of benefits and loss of rights.
Originating in 1993 as a grassroots commemoration in Winnipeg, it grew into a nationwide day of remembrance to address the historical overlooking of Indigenous veterans’ sacrifices.
