Algoma Manor Nursing Home chosen as one of three pilot sites to launch new model

By Rosalind Russell – Seniors in the Algoma District will soon have more support to stay in their own homes, thanks to a new program being launched for the first time in Ontario.

Algoma Manor Nursing Home CEO Pamela Ficoeillo (FICK-ah-see-yellow) says it has been selected as one of three pilot sites in Ontario to launch Nursing Home Without Walls (NHWW), which aims to bring the services, expertise, and supports of long-term care homes directly into the community.

She says the program focuses on supporting frail seniors who are still living independently at home but require added assistance to remain safe, healthy, and connected for as long as possible.

Rather than only providing care within the walls of a long-term care home, participating organizations will serve as community hubs—offering proactive support before seniors require long-term care admission.

She adds the program will run for the next two years at no cost to the participants.

It has been championed by AdvantAge Ontario, the provincial association that  represents non-profit long-term care homes, and will be funded by Healthcare Excellence Canada and The Waltons Trust.
