Algoma Public Health launches 2026 Public Health Champion – Supporting Youth Edition

By Rosalind Russell – Algoma Public Health (APH) is launching the 2026 Public Health Champion – Supporting Youth Edition, recognizing people and organizations that help youth ages 12–18 thrive across the Algoma District.

According to the release, nominations are now open, and close January 20, 2027.

The focus on youth health is shaped by individual choices, and the agency wants youth to have access to strong relationships, welcoming spaces and access to supports.

Nominations are open for three categories: Youth Champion, Organization Supporting Youth and Adult Supporting Youth.

Nominees must attend school, work, volunteer or operate in the Algoma District.

Youth Champion (ages 12–18)

Recognizes a young person who supports the health and well-being of other youth or improves their school or community. This may include leading a peer initiative, creating welcoming spaces, or helping peers connect with activities, culture, resources, and support.

Organization Supporting Youth

Recognizes a program, group, school, business, agency, or community organization that improves conditions for youth—for example, by offering affordable programs, transportation, food, equipment, safe spaces, or youth-informed services.

 Adult Supporting Youth

Recognizes an adult whose actions help youth feel supported, connected, and able to thrive. This may include mentoring, coaching, advocating, consistently showing up, removing barriers to participation, or creating safe, inclusive, and youth-friendly environments.

 Eligibility

Youth nominees must be enrolled in Grades 7–12 at the time of nomination. Current APH Board members, employees, and learners on active placement at APH during the nomination period are not eligible.
