By Rosalind Russell – It’s time to celebrate the Franco-Ontarian flag’s 50th anniversary, which will be marked at local schools and special gatherings throughout the day today.
The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario is in the City of Greater Sudbury to participate in the celebrations, visit local schools, host the unveiling reception for a province-wide initiative and attend various community events.
The flag was created by Laurentian University professor Gaétan Gervais (and the assistance of three students: Michel Dupuis, Donald Obonsawin and Yves Tassé), and was flown for the first time at the University of Sudbury building on September 25, 1975.
Various celebrations will be held throughout the day.
Locally, French schools in Espanola, Elliot Lake, Blind River and other North Shore schools will be raising the flag, hosting parades, open houses and celebrating their heritage.
