Citizen’s coalition disappointed with decision regarding Dean Lake Bridge

By Rosalind Russell – After much discussion, Huron Shore Council voted Wednesday night to decommission the Dean Lake Bridge permanently in favour of the Travis Road route as an alternative.

The bridge had to be shut down last winter and was reopened with load restrictions, but a failed culvert in April led to its closure once again.

Community Voices Committee representative Mary Johnson says they are disappointed with the decision.

Johnson adds the committee asked council to commit to a timeline for restoring access to the bridge adding a petition with over 900 signatures was also presented.

Council decided it was prohibitive to repair the bridge, which would cost millions of dollars, let alone replacing it with a new structure.

Johnson says the committee is not giving up and are moving ahead to have their group registered as a non-profit to raise funds to rejuvenate the bridge.

With Travis Road available as an alternate route, council will be looking at road surface improvements to provide safe access in the area.
