By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake council has given the go-ahead for several events to be held over the winter months including a major change to one of its largest gatherings, the annual fishing derby.
The city decided to move the 2024 Ice Fishing Derby from Horne Lake to Spine Beach for accessibility and safety reasons.
Events Coordinator, Leigh-Anne Doyle told council staff looked at another location option because of issues with accessibility that arose in 2023.
She says last year, traffic parked on both sides of Highway 108 leaving a narrow, snow-covered roadway for vehicles and pedestrians to share and leading to some concerns for safety.
Doyle adds the Collins Hall will be used once again as the venue for prize announcements and warm-up space.
Council agreed to the venue change for the event set for February 24th, 2024.
