Council approves directing $350,000 for arena bracing

By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake Council has given its approval directing $350,000 towards braces for Rogers Arena if needed for ongoing remedial work.

Interim CAO, Rob deBortoli says the funds, which could be drawn from the Buildings and Facilities Capital Reserves, is for knee brace adjusters to restore building stability and truss integrity.

He says council was made aware that geometric stresses impacted the load bearing capacity of the building and that corrective action would be required to remediate this by installing the knee brace connectors.

He adds since the budget was presented, there have been some changes to the scope of work so when the project is finished and costs reconciled, should a surplus exist, it could be applied to this expense.

DeBortoli says should there not be a surplus, then the remainder would come from reserves.

He adds all the materials for the braces have arrived, installation starts Wednesday, and once installed, the shoring supporting the roof can be removed.
