Elliot Lake council approves former civic centre to be developed as a plaza

By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake City Council has approved a proposal to develop the former Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre property as a retail plaza.

Last week, council approved an application by Stacked Franchising Limited to develop the property into a 10,000-square-foot plaza.

The civic centre, which was a community arts and theatre center also housed offices, the Welcome Centre, the Art Gallery, and the Elliot Lake Nuclear and Mining Museum.

Many of those services have now found new homes in the city.

The roof of the building collapsed in 2019, and after assessing the damage, council decided to demolish it because the cost of repairs would have been prohibitive.

As for timeline, site development and design plans are being finalized, as well as engineering reports with the build expected to begin later this year.
