Elliot Lake Fire Department responds to two residential fires

By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake Fire Chief John Thomas says his fire crews were busy this weekend, with not one, but two residential fires.

He says the first was Saturday afternoon around five am for an apartment fire at 145 Mississauga Avenue.

He says upon arrival on scene, the fire department crew noticed smoke coming from the second story of the apartment and they quickly brought under control keeping it confined to the kitchen area.

Thomas says there was approximately $75,000 in damage done to the apartment, but no injuries reported with the cause of the fire determined as accidental.

He says the next day, on Sunday just after three pm, the fire fighters received another 911 call for a fire at 5 MacFarlane Road.

He says there was heavy smoke, and flames were visible at the rear of the residence with downed hydro wires making it more difficult to get the fire out.

Thomas says the crew was able to finally get it out but with heavy damage estimated at $275,000.

He adds there were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
