Espanola family needs some assistance to offset medical trip

An Espanola family has to go to Ottawa for treatment of their teen son, but government supports do not cover all the costs involved.|

Amber Dixon’s 16-year-old son Ricky, who is a past Easter Seals Ambassador, has to go the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario for monitoring of his seizures.

She says they held a fundraiser in Espanola this past weekend but they are a bit short to cover all the costs.

She says they have to be there for five days and the travel grant only covers one support person.

However, she adds, because of Ricky’s seizures, he requires two support people when traveling — one to monitor him for seizures and one to do the driving.

She says while she can stay in supportive housing the second individual has to stay in a hotel, which is another additional cost.
