Espanola Lions Club has a record year – launching new initiative in two weeks

By Rosalind Russell – The Espanola Lions Club has been busy this year and they are not stopping anytime soon.

Member spokesperson Grant Lewis says the club has supported many worthwhile projects throughout the year including the most recent check presentation of $35,000 for the W. P. Foster Park & Splash Pad and $20,000 raised for North Shore Search and Rescue through the Canada Day Duck Race.

He estimates the club has been successful in distributing over $125,000 this year already.

He says their next major initiative is hosting their own Catch the Ace fundraiser where people can buy tickets to win some big money and help the club raise funds for their various projects.

Lewis explains in the past, they partnered with the Little Current Lions Club, but will now run their own campaign focused on the Espanola and North Shore corridor communities. Home Hardware donated $1,000 to kick off the new campaign, which launches later this month, but tickets are on sale now.

Lewis adds just contact your former contact for your tickets, since the same volunteers are in place for this campaign.

He says on Wednesday July 19th at 6:15 pm, they will officially launch the program live at the Espanola Complex and on their Facebook page.

Lewis adds Home Hardware has generously donated $1,000 to kick off the new campaign, and tickets can now be purchased from Lions members and supporters at $5 each.

Lewis also explains how the game will play out: There will be 52 envelopes numbered 1 to 52. Then, into each envelope will be placed one card, one of which will be the ACE of spades. The envelopes will be sealed and attached to a board in order.

Then the tickets – they are already printed, with the date of the draw, the license number, the prize, plus other required info.  Now it’s your job to buy a ticket ($5).

Print your name and phone number, select a lucky envelope number, and write it in the box.  All the bought tickets are put in a drum and one stub is selected. That lucky person automatically wins the DRAW prize which will vary according to how many tickets are sold that week.

Also, the numbered envelope indicated on the stub will be opened. If indeed that envelope contains the ACE OF SPADES, that person will also win the PROGRESSIVE pot. If the ACE OF SPADES is not “caught”, new tickets are printed, that numbered envelope is eliminated and the process starts again for draw # 2 and the Progressive pot grows.

There will be 16 draws in total. And, if the ACE OF SPADES is not caught, there is a special draw to catch it at the end of the season. Good luck!
