By Grant Lewis – From October till March, there are great things going on at the Curling Club in town. Rocks are banging, brooms are sweeping, people are moving, and good times are happening.
Curling is often thought as an older persons’ game….right? ….WRONG!!! Once a week, after school, you can see young curlers from 6 yrs. old to 14 delivering rocks, sweeping rocks, using the correct turns, aiming for the broom; but, most importantly having a good time. All these things are possible thanks to the effort, time and expertise of coaches J.P. Lamothe, Alan Emily, Deb Berry and Deb Lambert (known as the Two Debs). Some kids use the Junior rocks but otherwise all the rules of curling are followed.
During the season, weather permitting, there are bonspiels with the Island. The season wrap up is a fun filled afternoon with parents and family, with lots of POPCORN, and some skating and eating, at the annual Popcorn Spiel.
The Espanola Lions is always pleased to support Junior Curling in town. On hand from the Curling Club is J.P. Lamothe to receive a cheque for $3,400 from Lion member Randy Edwards.
