By Rosalind Russell – Despite a serious injury, an Espanola teen is heading to the United States on a baseball scholarship.
Eighteen-year-old Braiden Paul has been playing ball since he was ten years old, and is now heading to Chesapeake Junior College in Maryland to play with the Skipjacks.
Braiden says he was working in the St. Charles School wood shop last October when he cut off several digits on his right hand on a jointer.
He says he doesn’t remember the accident but thought his pitching days were behind him.
However, after several surgeries, he picked up a baseball in January and discovered his throwing arm was not going to let him down.
He adds that while most pitchers use two fingers along the seams of a baseball, causing the ball to dance in various ways, Paul now uses three.
That success led to the scholarship and his chance to eventually play pro-ball, so he is heading down to the U. S. this summer, thankful he can still play the game he loves.
He is finishing out his season as a pitcher and first baseman before heading south of the border.
