By Rosalind Russell – With more rain on the way, several Manitoulin Island municipalities have declared a state of emergency with the ongoing flood situation in the townships of Assiginack, Billings and Tekhummah, Gordon/Barrie Island and Central Manitoulin.
Central Manitoulin has ordered sandbags and loads of sand to help residents protect their homes and businesses from increasing flood risk.
Meanwhile, conservation authorities across the three districts of Algoma, Manitoulin and Sudbury have upgraded to Flood Watch status.
Weather forecasts indicate that moderate rainfall is expected over the next five days and the fluctuating temperatures will accelerate snowmelt and increase runoff across the watersheds.
