Flood watch elevated to flood warnings – Algoma, Manitoulin & Sudbury

By Rosalind Russell – Flood warnings are in place across many areas of Algoma, Manitoulin and Sudbury, as well as many other districts in Ontario.

All main waterways including the Spanish, Vermilion, Sauble and Mississagi rivers, have been steadily rising and the Ministry of Natural Resources, as well as affected municipalities, are keeping a close eye on the water levels.

Several roads are closed due to washouts and anyone having to travel is asked to call their municipal offices to find out which roads are impassable.

Rain is not forecast in the near future, but the rising temperatures are accelerating the snow melt, which means more water flow from the watershed.

As for the dams, several are being gradually opened to allow for increased flow to lessen the impact of the snow melt, and they are also being closely monitored.

Due to the rising water levels, many communities have also put drinking water advisories in place. Check with your local municipality and/or band office, for more information.

The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre is also working with communities impacted by the recent flooding including providing sandbags to communities on Manitoulin Island.

Several municipal declarations of emergency remain in effect.

Also be aware drinking water advisories have also been put in place in some communities where systems have been adversely affected by the flooding.

Again, check with your local office.

Impacted Ontarians should:

• Follow local advisories

• Download WeatherCAN app or visit: http://weather.gc.ca

• Check https://511on.ca/ for road info

• Exercise caution around rivers, riverbanks and shorelines.
