By Rosalind Russell – Blind River welcomed guests from across the region to mark the grand opening of a new treatment facility yesterday.
Local MPP Bill Rosenberg says the new Benbowopka (BEN-bow-wah-pick-ka) Treatment Centre is a 16-bed, 17,000 square foot facility in Blind River.
He says partnership between governments, Indigenous organizations, health care providers and communities are essential in building a system that responds to the needs of people.
He adds next week the centre will open its doors to heal both culturally and as a part of a full continuum of care from pre-treatment, through residential programs followed through with after care.
Several speakers took part in the formal ceremony, which included MC Chantelle Evans, Maamwesying CEO Carol Eshkakogan, Mamaweswen CEO Allan Moffat, Elder Nelson Toulouse with prayers, Maamwesying Board Chair Peyton Pitiwanakwat and MP Terry Sheehan.
