Historic process underway for Sagamok-Anishinawbek First to take over child wellbeing

By Rosalind Russell – Sagamok-Anishinawbek First Nation is set to take over all aspects of child wellbeing from the federal and provincial government. Officials call it a major milestone for the community located south-west of Massey outside of Sables-Spanish Rivers Township.

According to the release, Sagamok’s Koognaasewin Negotiation Committee met with representatives from Canada and Ontario in a formal ceremony to begin the physical process of transferring the responsibilities for all aspects of child wellbeing at the local level.

Earlier this Spring, the First Nation declared its intent to assert jurisdiction over child wellbeing through Bill C-92 with the Governments of Canada and Ontario.

Sagamok established its Negotiation Committee and assigned Roger Jones as Lead Negotiator.
