Historical Day for the SS Norisle

By Rosalind Russell – It was a historic day for Manitowaning and its favourite ship, the MS Norisle, which left its berth for the last time yesterday.

The tugboat Enosse arrived at Manitowaning Bay earlier this week for its preparations and towed the Norisle around noon yesterday.

It will be towed to Port Colbourne for recycling.

The MS Norisle is a Canadian steam-powered automobile ferry that operated between Tobermory and South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island alongside her sister ships, the MS Norgoma, and the MS Normac.

Replaced by the Chi-Cheemaun after 1974, the Norisle was moved to Manitowaning to serve as a floating museum.

She served in this capacity until 2008, by which time she had become unsafe for access by the public.

She will now be recycled although about five percent will be preserved for historical reasons or disposed of by other means.
