By Rosalind Russell – Kenjgewin Teg based of M’Chigeeng on Manitoulin Island is expanding its health-training program to include personal support workers.
President Beverley Roy says a lot of their programming is moving towards health care because that is where the main interest is, there is an aging population and a real need to fill the labour shortage.
She adds through $120,000 in provincial funding and a designation as an official Living Classroom delivery site, the institute will be offering its personal support worker (PSW) program while addressing workforce needs on Manitoulin Island.
She says the one-year program is possible through a partnership with Canadore College out of North Bay delivered online and a one-person day per week at either the Wikwemikong Nursing Home or St. Joseph’s Lodge in Gore Bay with students completing hands-on labs, simulation training and a 265-hour clinical placement.
The program will begin in September.
She adds the Living Classroom model is an innovative educational framework that integrates health-care training directly into long-term-care and retirement homes.
Roy says the program is funded by the Government of Ontario and led by the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA), in partnership with the Ontario Association of Adult and Continuing Education School Board Administrators (CESBA).
