MANITOULIN OPP ENGAGES COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVERS DURING OPERATION SAFE DRIVER WEEK

(ESPANOLA , ON) – A couple of weeks ago, from July 13 to 19, 2025, the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) participated in Operation Safe Driver Week, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and other road safety partners. This annual initiative focuses on education and enforcement targeting unsafe driving behaviours among commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers.

Throughout the week, Manitoulin OPP officers conducted various traffic stops and inspections of CMVs. These efforts aimed to promote compliance with safety regulations and reduce the risk of serious collisions involving large vehicles.

Highlights from the week include:

Tuesday, July 15, 2025 – 11:30 p.m.

Manitoulin OPP conducted a traffic stop on a CMV on Highway 17 in the Baldwin Township. As a result of the investigation, a 30-year-old driver from Chelmsford, was charged with Fail to enter defect in daily inspection report and fail to surrender insurance card.

Wednesday, July 16, 2025 – 12:00 p.m.

Manitoulin OPP conducted a traffic stop on a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) on Highway 17 in the Baldwin Township. As a result of the investigation, a 25-year-old driver from Woodstock, was charged with insecure load – commercial motor vehicle. 

Friday, July 18, 2025 – 1:30 p.m.

Manitoulin OPP conducted a traffic stop on a CMV on Highway 542 in Sandfield Township for an insecure load. The driver was provided education on proper load security. 

Friday, July 18, 2025 – All Day

Manitoulin OPP officers conducted focused CMV enforcement in Espanola, checking six CMVs and directing the drivers to complete Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS). Two drivers were charged with various CMV-related offences.

The Manitoulin OPP remains committed to holding CMV drivers accountable to safe driving practices and compliance with regulations. Commercial drivers carry a unique responsibility for safety due to the size and impact of the vehicle they operate. Unsafe behaviours such as speeding, following too closely, improper lane changes, and distracted driving can have catastrophic consequences.

Additionally, the OPP wants to remind CMV drivers that they must maintain a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of zero.

The Manitoulin OPP continues to patrol local highways and communities to ensure all road users remain safe. Public safety is a shared responsibility, and initiatives like Operation Safe Driver Week help reinforce the importance of accountability on our roads.
