By Rosalind Russell – The Manitoulin Phragmites Project is on hold at the moment since they got rejected for Ontario funding and delays are expected with the federal funding application.
Project coordinator, Judith Jones, says they are concentrating on working with volunteers and doing herbicide work where it’s already planned.
Jones says Manitoulin Phragmites Week, which takes place next week, is still a go and if they receive word on approval of the federal grant, they will be able to continue clearing the invasive, tall grass from areas of Manitoulin Island.
Jones has been overseeing the clearing of the fast-growing plant for over five years with some success.
