By Rosalind Russell – Noojmowin Teg hosted this years’ National Indigenous Day gathering held at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex last Friday.
There were several booths set up at the complex including Cheyanne Pitawanakwat from Whitefish River First Nation who provided a workshop on turning fish skin and scales into leather, and then in turn, into jewellery, adornments or clothing.
The Flames Drum Group from AB Ellis Public School also opened the ceremony and provided the music throughout the day.
Made up by elementary students, the group was formed some three years ago when the drum was donated to the school.
The day also featured a traditional fish and chips lunch, workshops and giveaways from the various health groups hosting the booths.
