Nickel Belt MPP honours Falconbridge mining tragedy

By Rosalind Russell – Nickel Belt MPP Frances Gelinas met with dozens of people yesterday for what she calls an emotional ceremony for the 39th anniversary of the tragedy at a local mine where four miners died.

She says the accident took place those many years ago at Falconbridge Number 5 shaft that killed miners Sulo Korpela, Richard Chenier, Daniel Lavallée and Wayne St.-Michel.

Gelinas says wreaths were laid by members of the USW in support of Mine Mill UNIFOR 598, and herself in memory of the four.

She adds she was honoured to address the 100 family and community members remembering not only the four, but all of those who died in the mining workplace in tragic circumstances.
