On The Political Front: Carney and Ford – Canada not for sale

By Rosalind Russell – Canada’s provincial and territorial premiers expect to hear from Prime Minister Mark Carney today, following his meeting yesterday with U-S President Donald Trump.  Carney says the session went well, calling it “constructive” and “wide-ranging.”  He added the two leaders now have a path forward, with more meetings to take place in the coming weeks.  Carney will also meet with Trump again at the G-7 summit in July in Alberta.  While at the White House, the Prime Minister also quelled any notion of Canada becoming the 51st state.

Carney says the opportunity is in the partnership.

The province is also expanding its Skills Development Fund by nearly a billion dollars over the next three years – to a total of 2.5 billion.

Officials say it’s the next step in the plan to protect Ontario workers in the face of tariffs and economic uncertainty.

The province says the money will help train and reskill Ontario workers, including those directly impacted by layoffs resulting from tariffs.

Premier Doug Ford says the province will always have the backs of Ontario’s workers.  He also reiterated his support for Prime Minister Mark Carney – who was in Washington yesterday to meet with President Donald Trump.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says her government won’t hold an independence referendum — but she expects a citizen-driven ballot to be voted on next year.

Still with the story, Ford also attended the Ontario Skills Competition yesterday where several local students from Espanola High School and Manitoulin Secondary School are competing this week, which is also Education Week across the province.
