OPP commemorates 50 years of the Franco-Ontarian flag

By Rosalind Russell – You may notice a specially wrapped green and white Ontario Provincial Police cruiser out and about throughout our districts.

The OPP has launched its new police vehicle that is decked out to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian flag.

Officials say it’s now travelling through eastern and northern Ontario, is driven by a bilingual officer and provides a visual representation of the OPP’s commitment to French language services and Franco-Ontarian communities.

The vehicle will be in Sudbury on September 25 for celebrations marking 50 years since the flag was first raised at the University of Sudbury in 1975.

The vehicle will also be travelling to local area schools in the fall ,including La Renaissance in Espanola and Jeunesse Nord in Blind River, and Our Lady of Lourdes in Elliot Lake.

The Franco-Ontarian flag was co-created by North Bay’s Michel Dupuis and Laurentian University Professor Gaétan Gervais.
