By Rosalind Russell – Last Saturday, over 5,500 people joined at 60 locations across the country, including Elliot Lake, to celebrate parkrun in Canada, marking ten years of free, weekly 5K events that bring together walkers, runners and volunteers.
Euan Bowman, parkrun’s territory manager for North America, says it was a new national participation record for parkrun Canada and included over 600 volunteers.
He says the parkrun movement began in the United Kingdom in 2004, and today boasts more than 2,800 parkruns weekly across 23 countries.
Sheriff Creek Wildlife Sanctuary parkrun started in Elliot Lake two years ago and has held 73 parkrun events in that time.
Bowman adds that anyone who loves the outdoors can take part in the weekly gatherings.
