By Rosalind Russell – A cyclist will be cruising the roads at the end of the month to raise money for health care.
Manitoulin Health Centre CEO, President Paula Fields says community-driven initiatives play an important role in strengthening healthcare on Manitoulin Island when it comes to resident Peter Carter taking on the road in Perth.
She says on May 25, Carter will be participating in the Perth 700, a seven-day event in Perth, Ontario where over 40 riders will cover 700 miles over the course of a week.
He aims to raise $10,000 in support of Centre’s Vital Visions – Higher Resolution Leads to Clearer Solutions fundraising campaign towards upgrading ultrasound equipment.
The Perth 700 has a strong legacy, having launched in 2012 as “Seven Days in May” in support of pancreatic cancer research and raising over $2 million. When the original organizers stepped away, Carter and two fellow cyclists chose to continue the ride independently, supporting causes close to their communities.
For Carter, that cause is clear—strengthening healthcare on Manitoulin Island.
An avid cyclist and advocate for active living, Peter has completed a cross-Canada cycling journey in 2022 and has logged over 10,000 kilometres annually for the past six years.
He remains actively involved with the Ontario Randonneurs and the Manitoulin Cycling Club and is also a proud member of the Gore Bay Rotary Club, reflecting his strong commitment to community service.
To support Peter’s ride, donations can be made through Canada Helps: https://www.mhc.on.ca/
