Rest area under construction memorializing original AB Ellis Public School

By Rosalind Russell – It has taken a couple of years, but the Rainbow District School Board has finally begun the work of creating the memorial for the original AB Ellis Public School.

Over the last week, there has been a buzz of activity while the stonework was laid, and the original cornerstone installed as a quiet sitting area for visitors to the site.

There is still work to be done, which is expected to be completed soon.

After serving the Espanola area for over 100 years, the former building housing A.B. Ellis Public School was demolished in January of 2023.

The school started out as the Espanola Public School back in 1919.

It was renamed the AB Ellis Public School to honour the late Andrew Ellis who served as its principal for 40 years.

AB Ellis Public School now shares space with Espanola High School.

The former property has been turned into a parking lot, and features basketball courts, a soccer area and now the rest area.
