By Rosalind Russell – September 30th marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day – Every Child Matters.
According to various school sources, students are being encouraged to wear orange shirts to mark the day.
The orange shirt symbolizes the loss of culture, freedom, and self-esteem that many Indigenous children experienced.
Schools will also fly their flags at half-mast.
Many schools, including A.B. Ellis Public and Espanola High in Espanola will host a moment of silence to remember the children who never made it home from residential schools, as well as leading classes focused on why it is important to remember the day.
Moose FM will be broadcasting “A Day To Listen” from 6 am to 6pm.
This year’s theme is Honouring Truth with Action and will be hosted once again by JUNO-Award winning singer & songwriter William Prince.
