Total fire bans in several municipalities across local districts

By Rosalind Russell – Several municipalities in the Algoma, Manitoulin, and Sudbury districts have put total fire bans in place over the last couple of days due to the hot, dry weather and the conditions in the bush.

A Total Fire Ban (TFB) is a legal restriction that prohibits lighting or maintaining any fire in the open air during periods of extreme fire danger to prevent wildfires.

The Ministry of Natural Resources & Forests can impose fire bans, but so can municipalities.

Locally, check with your municipality or First Nation to see if a ban is in place.

Anyone violating the ban can face substantial fines.

Also, within our local area, the Sudbury Fire 02, which broke out late last week north of Highway 17, is now being held.

As of Thursday evening, there were eight active wildfires in the Northeast Region.

Of those, four were not under control, three were being held, and one was under control.

Some driving restrictions have also been put in place due to the Gogama Fire, which is now over 3,000 hectares in size and is not under control.
