By Rosalind Russell – The Canadian Institute of Forestry has appointed a veteran forester from Sagamok-Anishnawbek First Nation as its new board president.
According to the Canadian Institute of Forestry Dean Assinewe, a longtime Registered Professional Forester, instructor and mentor, is serving his third year on the board and is also a member of the Institute’s Algonquin section.
Assinewe says he is proud to take on the presidency since the institute is widely respected for its role as a voice for forest practitioners across Canada.
Assinewe is Ojibwe and adds in his new role, he will continue with overall governance, but will also be advancing the goals of the institute to promote greater inclusion of Indigenous Peoples, culture and values.
The institute, which was founded in 1908, is a non-profit organization, which serves as a national voice and the issues facing the forestry sector.
