Elliot Lake council passes budget with increase in taxes due to increases outside their control

By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake city council passed its 2026 municipal budget in mid-December with no increase in the municipal levy, but property owners will still see a 3.06% increase in their taxes due to increases outside of council’s control.

According to the release, that includes the OPP, Algoma Public Health, and Algoma District Services Administration Board portions of the municipal levy.

Council also approved more than 60% increase in contributions to capital and reserves which

support a number of infrastructure projects such as the Rogers Arena, the secondary digester cover at the wastewater plant and improvements to cottage lot roadways.

Other ongoing projects include improvements to water control systems, repairs to existing municipal facilities and a residential road project, the first the city is undertaking in five years.
