By Rosalind Russell – Algoma Public Health presented its Toxic Drugs in Algoma report to Elliot Lake council, which outlines how to move forward in partnership with the Elliot Lake Drug Strategy Committee and other initiatives.
The report was compiled and presented by Hilary Gordon (Program Manager of Community Wellness & School Health), and Ciara Connery, (the Public Health Nurse heading up Community Wellness) on behalf of the agency.
The purpose is to provide a general understanding of the toxic drug crisis, how it is being experienced in Algoma, and what people can do as a community to respond using local data, community engagement, findings and more.
The Elliot Lake Drug Strategy Committee also provides input including its priorities, such as mitigating harms related to substance use in the community, facilitating education and sharing between community organizations to decrease gaps and more.
Detailed priorities and potential strategies to address the issue are also part of the report, which can be found at the following links.
