Elliot Lake to develop economic strategy and diversification for the local airport

By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake council has accepted a review of the Elliot Lake Airport and will consider ways to improve its economic viability.

It was done by Explorer, a consulting firm, which council directed last October to complete a review of the local air port and its operations as how to make better use of the asset.

The company’s Jason Kipfer says the Explorer team was contracted to conduct the review and carried out a site visit last November, as well as carried out reviews of air traffic, all aspects of the airport’s operations and how the airport can evolve from a primarily operational facility into a strategic municipal asset supporting economic growth.

He adds there must be capital investment with the runway requiring new pavement and upgrading to the hangers.

With the final report, Economic Development Manager, Steve Antunes, says a survey is underway focusing on travellers and recommended to council that the data be used to form part of the city’s new Economic Development Strategy, which has just been tendered out.

Council accepted the report and it will be incorporated into ongoing discussions about that strategy over the next few months.
