Anishinabek Nation Statement – Ring of Fire

By Rosalind Russell – The Anishinabek Nation says recent statements from some political parties about the Ring of Fire are quote – ‘akin to the colonial days of old’ and need to stop.

Grand Council Chief Linda Debassige is calling on all parties and federal election candidates to acknowledge and respect their rights, uphold signed treaties and engage with them in a spirit of partnership.

She says their ancestors were allies of the Crown during the War of 1812, World Wars I and II, and more.

Debassige stresses it seems we’re entering another pivotal time in history, and they remain allies and continue to uphold their Treaty obligations — and parties and candidates must do the same. She emphasizes they have not relinquished their rights to the minerals and resources within their territories – noting treaties solidified a relationship of mutual respect and benefit with the sharing of resources.
