By-election underway for Whitefish River First Nation

By Rosalind Russell – A by-election to fill a vacancy on Whitefish River First Nation is underway following the passing of a long-time councillor.

Leona Nahwegahbow passed away earlier this Spring so in accordance with the First Nation’s election code, the bylaw must be held within 45 days of the position being declared vacant.

The declaration took place on February 24th and an electoral officer appointed.

Nomination notices were sent out, and a nomination meeting was held on March 4th with six nominees.

The nominees had until last Friday to accept the nomination. 

The next step was to mail was to post the notice this past weekend and distribute mail-in ballots.

By-Election Day will be held April 4th.
