By Rosalind Russell – An environmental group is being formed in the Township of Sables-Spanish Rivers to highlight local concerns about a possible solar farm.
Co-founder Dan St. Lawrence says the groundwork has begun on forming the Massey Wildlife Conservation Committee to bring attention to five key areas of concerns, including the opposition against the Massey Solar Project, preserving natural heritage and finding candidates to run in the upcoming municipal elections.
He says since council gave its approval to Potentia Renewable Limited’s application last August for a proposed 242-hectare solar development, opposition had grown including letters from various local organizations. (the Massey Agricultural Society, the Birch Lake Resident’s Association, and the Massey/North Shore Federation of Agriculture).
The committee is also lobbying the Independent Electricity System Operator to reject the grant funding application from Potentia.
St. Lawrence adds the committee will be organizing public meetings soon so they can move forward with their mandate.
