Cameras going up in Elliot Lake to deter crime

By Rosalind Russell – Starting this week, the City of Elliot Lake, through funding provided by the Ministry of the Solicitor General, will be proceeding with the installation of Closed-Circuit Television cameras (CCTV) in the City’s downtown core.
According to the city, the goal of this project is to provide a safer environment for residents by assisting police with the ability to obtain evidence when a crime has been committed.

The CCTV units will operate as a passive system and will not be actively monitored.

Footage will be only available to the OPP upon official request, when a crime has been reported.

Current work includes the installation of the hardware.
Next steps, which will include the backend software, the official implementation of the project and the adoption of the policy to guide it will take place in mid-to-late March.
