Displaced fire victims receiving aid

By Rosalind Russell – The Red Cross has stepped up to help several individuals who have lost their home to a residential fire in Elliot Lake on Wednesday.

Elliot Lake Fire Chief John Thomas says six people have been displaced by the fire, which occurred in an apartment complex in the city’s downtown core.

He says there are five apartments that suffered heavy damage, and up to seven businesses, near the structure also received water damage.

Thomas adds the estimated damage is around $5-million and the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office investigator has arrived and is on the scene to see if a cause can be found.

The fire started shortly before three am Wednesday morning and took up to seven hours before the fire department was able to put it out.
